Frequently Asked Questions
- 01We limit each trip to 13 paid vehicles, plus our lead and sweep cars, bringing the total to 15. This ensures a better trail experience and allows us to maintain reasonable rates while achieving our company goals. We firmly believe that fewer cars contribute to a more enjoyable adventure.
- 02When driving your UTV in Baja, you are required by law to have highway auto insurance. You can purchase this from Ride Baja or Baja Bound.
- 03Yes, a passport is essential for all trips. It serves as your lifeline in case of emergencies that require airlifting from Mexico. Your safety is our top priority, and being prepared is something we pride ourselves on.
- 04No, it is illegal to bring any weapons, firearms, or drugs into Mexico. Please be aware of this law to ensure a safe and trouble-free trip. Prescription medications are permissible as long as they are in their original pharmacy bottles with your name and prescription information clearly labeled.
- 05You can pay for fuel in a couple of ways: by credit card in U.S. dollars or with pesos. At BeFree Off-Road, we use our company credit card at gas stations and are prepared to pay with cash in places that do not accept cards. While most stations do accept credit cards, it’s always best to be prepared for the unexpected.
- 06Baja boasts a diverse landscape. After a brief highway drive upon crossing the border, we hit our first dirt road trail. The trails vary, with some well-groomed and others more rugged. Expect fast, twisty roads and changing terrain that will keep you on your toes. As we navigate through Baja, you’ll encounter mountainous areas and coastal trails, including sections of the Baja 500 racetrack. These trails allow you to unleash the full potential of your UTV, offering thrilling curves and exhilarating straightaways.
- 07Yes, highways are used to reach towns for lodging and refueling, as well as to connect sections of various trails. While our focus is on providing an off-road experience, some highway use is necessary. When on the highway, expect to drive at a fast pace, keeping up with local traffic, and be mindful of local laws to ensure a respectful visit.

- 09Absolutely! You can ship your car to our headquarters, and we will transport it to the border for a fee. This allows you to fly into San Diego International Airport and meet us at our staging hotel near the Tecate border. From there, we’ll arrange a shuttle to take you to the staging area.
- 10A stock UTV is perfectly capable of completing the trip, provided it meets BeFree Off-Road's general requirements. While upgrades can enhance your experience, they are not necessary for participation.
- 11Avoid overpacking; you will get dirty! Check the weather forecast before your trip to be prepared for varying conditions. Bring shorts and T-shirts for warm days, along with pants and a light jacket for cooler coastal mornings. Don’t forget rain gear for the muddy, rainy trips— Baja’s weather can be unpredictable!
- 12Accommodations vary throughout the trip. Some nights, you'll find us in small rustic off-road camps, while others will have you in more comfortable hotels. The places we stay in are rich in Baja history and always offer their own unique charm.
- 13We promise to stop at some of the best street taco spots in Baja for lunch each day. On some days, our chase crew will bring food out on the trail for lunch. Breakfast, usually served around 8 AM, is followed by immediately hitting the trails. Dinner is served at the hotel upon arrival, with timing varying day-to-day.
- 14We strive to make your trip to Baja as seamless as possible. Included in your package are secured parking, experienced guides and mechanics, on-trail support, access to our photos via Photo Circle, as well as breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
- 15Please note that the following are not included in the trip package: - Baja highway insurance - Fuel for your UTV - Spare parts available on the chase truck (which can be purchased for an additional fee) - Alcoholic beverages
- 16BeFree Off-Road mechanics are limited to performing mechanical work on the trail for replaceable wearable parts only. This means our mechanics will not work on engines, transmissions, or major wiring issues, ensuring a safe and streamlined experience while on the trail.
- 17While there are many Baja UTV tour operators, we stand out by offering the most extensive selection of spare parts on the trail for the Polaris RZR Pro R platform. Both of our guide cars are Pro R platforms, and our chase trailer is stocked with an ample supply of spare parts to keep the vehicles running smoothly in the event of something unexpected.
